Project Completed in May 2007

Aman Environmental Construction (Aman) was contracted to perform the Remediation Action Plan at the former Santa Barbara Manufactured Gas Plant (MPG) project located at the south corner of the intersection of Santa Barbara Street and East De La Guerra Street in the central portion of the Santa Barbara Basin.

Phase III of the remediation involved excavation and removal of shallow soil at the site up to a maximum depth of 10 feet below ground surface (bgs). All excavation work was performed by Aman and the volume of soil removed was approximately 10,000 cubic yards. The excavation method employed was focused in protecting all existing structures at the site. In areas adjacent to building footings, the excavation was conducted by digging a series of small trenches that were backfilled with 2-sac sand slurry in sequence. These backfilled trenches were allowed to cure before adjacent excavation was undertaken. The excavation required shoring of the inside perimeter of the museum courtyard and a section of an historic adobe structure. Due to the structural sensitivity of the building, a drilled soldier pile shoring system was utilized to support the building foundations in the vicinity of the excavation. The soils between the piles were retained with wood lagging.
